History and the plague on our society today

The Biafran War: Agitations, Causes, and Results(1967-1970)

This year was 1967, it was a brutal  war in Nigeria, which killed an estimation of 1.3 million people, mostly from the Igbo tribe. A highly ranked military officer called Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu led the Biafran republic.

Ojukwu wanted an independent Igbo republic due to the violence that happened in the North as regard the Igbo tribe. Ojukwu sat for reconciliation and mediation, which failed woefully due to the fact that Nigeria government opposed secession. Due to this failure a bitter and horrific war broke out from 1967-1970.

Nigeria declared war on Biafra shortly after it’s declaration of independence, eventually resulting in the defeat of Biafra which ended in ultimate aggression and painstaking for each parties involved (Nigeria and the acclaimed republic of Biafra)

Immediate causes of the war was an agitation from the Eastern region to gain self independence from  Nigeria government due to some major political and cultural clashes between the northern region to ethnic religious violence and anti Igbo programs in the North Nigeria. The Niger Delta also played a strategic role.

The thirty month war left the country in a dehumanizing and demeaning conditions, as the consequences varied from death to destruction and damages of infrastructure which made the country detrimental to those that survived the sting of the war.

The war ended on 15th of January 1970, after Ojukwu fled for safety to Ivory coast, he spent several years in Ivory coast.

Nigeria rehabilitated Biafran into her folds in a ”no victor no vanquish” policy .

A New Biafra? Is this possible?

Now 50 Years after since the end of the war, some group of persons , reformed and  rebranded ragged the “Indigenous people of Biafra”(IPOB). This group of persons fight for the independence of independent state of Biafra led by Nnamdi Kano.

This group seeks for the separation of Eastern part of the country, they feel that the Nigeria government has not addressed the civil war properly (The Biafran War). The thirty month war  still plague the nation today.

In my opinion the Biafran war has shaped the Nigeria of today in it’s own form, let’s Learn from it and make necessary reforms.
